Volunteer Spotlight: Tom Heeger

Volunteer Tom Heeger’s generosity and guidance help keep RMHC St. Louis “on target” year after year.

Did you know that more than 15 committees help steer Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis and its many programs? These committees are comprised of volunteers who donate their time and talent to our organization in a variety of areas, from marketing to finance and human resources to special events. One of these committees is dedicated to planning our annual Kids & Clays fundraiser: a dinner auction and sporting clays tournament that raises more than $330,000 every summer.

Tom Heeger is a longstanding member of the Kids & Clays Committee. He joined in 2008 after participating in the event as an attendee for a few years. Since that time, he has become an integral part of the team. Every year, Tom goes above and beyond to solicit live auction items and secure event sponsorships, which help drive revenue. He also volunteers to set up for the dinner auction portion of the event.

Tom’s family is also involved with Kids & Clays. His wife, Vickie, and daughter Amy have volunteered at the tournament, and his other daughter Ann has participated in the shoot. In addition, Amy’s company, AME Constructors, is a corporate sponsor.

Tom also serves on the National Kids & Clays Foundation Board of Directors, which oversees the 24 sporting clays events that are hosted by RMHC chapters across the country. Throughout the past 20 years, the foundation has donated $20 million to these chapters. By joining this prestigious group, Tom is able to share the successful strategies behind our St. Louis event with others, helping them raise more funds for seriously ill children and their families.

“It’s such a good cause,” says Tom. “Hearing these families’ stories – it tugs at your heartstrings.”

Tom also says that working alongside the other committee members is what makes the experience extra special.

“When you have good people, good volunteers – there’s fun along with it,” he says.

We believe much of the fun can be attributed to Tom, who is well known among the other volunteers and RMHC staff for his sense of humor, generosity and big heart.

In addition to supporting the Kids & Clays event at such a high level, Tom and Vickie are members of the Cornerstone Society, which recognizes our organization’s major donors. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Donald H. and Mary Jane Buchanan Foundation, which donates $25,000 to RMHC St. Louis annually.

We couldn’t be more grateful to Tom for sharing his time and expertise with us in so many ways. He is truly an all-star volunteer!
